Welcome to Out of the Depths!
“Out of the Depths” finds its origin in Psalm 130, one of the seven penitential psalms, where the Psalmist cries, “Out of the depths I have cried to Thee, O Lord! Lord, hear my voice.”
In this context, “out of the depths” is often understood metaphorically, symbolizing a state of profound despair, anguish, or suffering, where one feels overwhelmed by circumstances. This heartfelt plea for help resonates with the human condition, shaped by the consequences of both Original Sin and personal wrongdoing.
Sin plunges humanity into these depths, compelling us to echo the Psalmist’s cry, imploring God for mercy and forgiveness. God’s ultimate response is revealed in Jesus Christ, who, “for us men and our salvation, came down from Heaven” (Nicene Creed). Just as Jesus descended into and emerged from the waters of baptism in the Jordan River, foreshadowing his death and resurrection, he reached into the depths of death to usher us into new life.
“For we are buried together with him by baptism into death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Through baptism, we embark on a journey into new life, enabling us to immerse ourselves in the depths of God’s love and mercy in Jesus Christ. We transition from the depths of sin and death to the eternal depths of the Holy Trinity.
Contemplating the depths of the Holy Trinity, Love Itself, is open to us as new creations, children of God. Out of the Depths is here to guide you on this exploration.
